The Artistic Director of Pensacola [FL] Little Theatre not only works with volunteer directors and their designs, but keep an eye on the rehearsals throughout the production. The Artistic Director generally works into the evening so that they can check in with cast/crew as they come into the building for rehearsals. The Artistic Director also sits in production meetings when they can or if they get a sense the team is under-preparing.
PLT adopted a mid-term evaluation that allows actors, crew, volunteers to let the company know if the process is going well for them, too. A little coaching prior to the final product goes a long way to volunteer longevity and satisfaction. If you find out someone was miserable or mistreated AFTER a show, you've acted too late. Each show also has a production coordinator who may also report there are issues to resolve. (Eyes on, hands on. Quality control for the organization and volunteer management for all concerned.)
