Commissioning a playwright to create brand new works gives the producer a great deal more input into shaping a project than presenting an already written piece. The playwright follows certain, often very specific, guidelines, thereby writing a play that is suitable to the commissioning party's needs and desires. Whatever the reason for the commission, the producer and playwright are entering into a complex business and legal arrangement, which must be as carefully structured as the play itself.
